keynote Session : "The social affordances of technology: Participatory media, instant messaging and GenAI"
Participatory media production is a powerful tool for fostering social learning within communities and organizations worldwide. The term includes diverse traditions such as participatory video, photovoice, or digital storytelling, which all use digital tools but are rooted in older, analogue traditions. Such methods are applied in areas including community development, activism, education, climate adaptation, and creating spaces for marginalized people to explore and express their experiences. Many participatory practitioners emphasise a commitment to social justice and practical application, making participatory media production both value-driven and action-oriented. In this presentation, I will explore the scholarship of practice that underlies participatory media production. Using a framework of social affordances, I examine what happens as new technologies create emergening possibilities for participatory engagement. Key questions include: How can we use technology in ways that align with social values? What opportunities do specific tools offer, and how are these shaped by participant identity and context? How can we manage differing perspectives and interests within collaborative projects? And what are the constraints and conceptual traps to pay attention to? To ground the discussion, I will share examples from real-world projects, including the development of Participatory Instant Messaging in an arts initiative that built a public expression of private experiences of migrants in Sweden. Finally, I will build on the concepts of social affordances and an ethics of care to review the potential of generative AI for participatory media practices.

参加型メディア制作は、世界中のコミュニティや組織において社会的学習を促進するための強力な手法です。この用語には、参加型ビデオ、フォトボイス、デジタル・ストーリーテリングといった多様な手法が含まれており、いずれもデジタルツールを活用しつつ、古くからのアナログ的な伝統に根ざしています。これらの方法は、地域開発、アクティビズム、教育、気候変動への適応、そして周縁化された人々が自らの経験を探求・表現する空間づくりなど、さまざまな分野で応用されています。 多くの参加型メディアの実践者は、社会正義へのコミットメントと実践的な応用を重視しており、参加型メディア制作は価値主導かつ実践志向のアプローチとなっています。 本プレゼンテーションでは、参加型メディア制作の根底にある実践の学問（scholarship of practice）を探求します。私は「社会的アフォーダンス（social affordances）」の枠組みを用いて、新しい技術が参加型の関わりにどのような新たな可能性をもたらすのかを考察します。 主な問いは以下の通りです： 社会的価値観に沿った形で、テクノロジーをどのように活用できるか？ 特定のツールはどのような機会を提供し、参加者のアイデンティティや文脈によってそれはどう影響されるか？ 協働プロジェクトにおける異なる視点や利害をどのように調整するか？ どのような制約や概念的な落とし穴に注意を払うべきか？ 議論を具体化するために、スウェーデンの移民に関する芸術イニシアティブの中で、個人的な体験を公共の表現へと昇華させた「参加型インスタント・メッセージング（Participatory Instant Messaging）」の事例を含む、実際のプロジェクト例を紹介します。 最後に、「社会的アフォーダンス」と「ケアの倫理（ethics of care）」の概念を基に、生成AIが参加型メディア実践にもたらす可能性について考察します。
Session 1: "Photovoice Workshop: Visualizing Lived Experience Through Participatory Photography"
In an increasingly complex global landscape, participatory research methods offer powerful tools for fostering mutual understanding and recognizing our common humanity. This workshop will introduce Photovoice—a collaborative visual methodology that places cameras in the hands of community members to document their realities, stimulate critical dialogue, and catalyze social change. Through this interactive session, participants will explore how Photovoice transcends traditional research boundaries by democratizing knowledge production and amplifying marginalized voices. The workshop will begin with a presentation of Photovoice's theoretical grounding in Paulo Freire's critical consciousness and feminist participatory approaches, followed by a practical demonstration of how visual storytelling can transform both individual perspectives and collective understandings. This will include a hands-on Photovoice mini-project, where attendees will create and interpret images that respond to prompts centered on human connections, community contributions, and cross-cultural understandings. By experiencing Photovoice as both active participants and potential facilitators, the workshop attendees will gain practical skills for implementing this method in diverse settings. The workshop will conclude with an exploration of how Photovoice can contribute to the Symposium's broader goals of improving quality of life through human science research and fostering greater compassion through transformed perspectives. No prior photography experience is necessary to participate in the workshop—just a smartphone and willingness to engage in visual dialogue about our shared human experience.

グローバルな状況がますます複雑化する現代において、参加型研究手法は、相互理解を深め、私たちの共通する人間性を見つめ直すための有力なツールとなっています。本ワークショップでは、「フォトボイス (Photovoice)」という共同的な視覚的アプローチを紹介します。これは、コミュニティの人々自身がカメラを手にし、自らの現実を記録し、批判的な対話を促し、社会変革のきっかけを生み出す手法です。 このインタラクティブセッションでは、知識の創出を民主化し、周縁化された声を可視化することで、フォトボイスがいかに従来の研究の枠を超えるかを体験的に学びます。ワークショップの前半では、パウロ・フレイレの「批判的意識」やフェミニズムに基づく参加型アプローチなど、フォトボイスの理論的背景を紹介します。続いて、視覚的ストーリーテリングが個人の視点や集団的理解にどのような変化をもたらすかについて、実演を交えて解説します。 また、参加者はフォトボイスのミニプロジェクトに取り組み、「人とのつながり」「コミュニティへの貢献」「異文化理解」をテーマとしたプロンプトに応じた写真を制作・解釈します。 参加者は、実際の体験者であると同時に、将来フォトボイスを実践するファシリテーターとしての視点も持ちながら、この手法を学びます。ワークショップの最後には、フォトボイスが人間科学研究を通じた生活の質の向上や視点の変容による、より大きな共感の促進というシンポジウムの広範な目標にどのように貢献し得るかを考察します。 写真の経験は問いません。スマートフォンをお持ちで、人間としての共通体験について視覚的に対話することに興味のある方は、どなたでもご参加いただけます。
SESSION 2: "Community Organising and One-to-One Conversations"
This session will focus on how to develop research questions, strategies, and methodologies that focus on community priorities and needs. The workshop will present the community organising tool of the 'one-to-one' conversation, as a way of learning about community members' self-interest and how to use this information to produce research projects that have lasting community impact.

Session 3: "Community-Oriented Participatory Research: Educational Research Scenarios"
This session entails discussing and practically applying some key concepts in participatory community-oriented research inclined towards social transformation. By ‘community’ is meant a social system where various individuals and groups simultaneously share but also contend over certain interests. As activities, participants will simulate communities in educational scenarios, as well as co-design, implement and evaluate mini research projects. The discussions will focus on research ideals (relevance, reliability, etc.) and relational ethics (power hierachies, equity and epistemic justice, etc.). The session is ideal for emerging scholars and practitioners intending to shift from researching about communities towards respectfully researching with communities.

本セッションでは、社会変革を目指す参加型のコミュニティ志向研究における主要な概念について議論し、それらを実践的に応用します。本セッションにおける「コミュニティ」とは、複数の個人やグループが共通の利益を共有しつつ、同時に利害の対立も内包する社会的システムを意味します。 参加者は、教育現場を想定したシナリオの中でコミュニティをシミュレーションし、ミニリサーチプロジェクトの共同設計・実施・評価に取り組みます。議論は、研究における理想（関連性、信頼性など）および関係性に基づく倫理（権力構造、公平性、認識論的正義など）に焦点を当てます。 本セッションは、コミュニティを「対象として調査する」段階から、コミュニティと「共に調査を進める」姿勢へと移行しようとする新進の研究者や実務者にとって最適な機会となるでしょう。
Session 4: "Seeing Differently: Participatory Video as a Research Method"
How can research become more inclusive, engaging, and grounded in everyday experience? This workshop introduces Participatory Video (PV), a creative and collaborative method where participants co-create short films to explore issues that matter to them. Widely used in community-based research, education, and social change, PV offers a fresh way of seeing, listening, and understanding the world. In this 75-minute session, Dr. Gusztáv Nemes (Senior Researcher, HUN-REN Centre for Economic and Regional Studies, Hungary) will guide participants through the basic principles and ethical dimensions of PV, drawing on real-life examples from European rural communities. A short film excerpt will spark group discussion around participation, representation, and co-creation in research. Participants will also engage in a simple, hands-on group activity using their smartphones to create short video scenes based on an accessible prompt. The aim is not technical perfection, but collaboration, creativity, and experiential learning. No prior video skills are required — just curiosity and a willingness to experiment. This English-language workshop is designed for Master’s students (and advanced undergraduates) from any discipline. It will be especially relevant to those interested in participatory research, qualitative methods, education, or visual storytelling. Attendance is limited to approximately 40 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Please bring a smartphone with video recording capability, and, or, a tablet with some software for editing you are somewhat familiar with.

研究を、より包摂的で魅力的なものにし、日常の経験に根ざしたものにするにはどうすればよいのでしょうか？ このワークショップでは、参加者が共に短編映画を制作し、自分たちにとって重要な課題を探求する創造的で協働的な手法「参加型ビデオ（Participatory Video: PV）」を紹介します。 PVは、コミュニティベースの研究、教育、社会変革の分野で広く使われており、世界の見方や聴き方、理解の仕方に新たな視点を提供する手法として注目されています。 この75分のセッションでは、ハンガリーのHUN-REN経済・地域研究センター 上級研究員であるグシュターヴ・ネメシュ博士が、ヨーロッパの農村地域での実例を交えながら、PVの基本原則および倫理的側面について解説します。 短編映画の一部上映を通じて、参加、表現、共創に関するグループディスカッションが行われます。さらに、参加者はスマートフォンを使った簡単な実践ワークに参加し、提示されたテーマに基づいて、短い動画シーンの撮影・制作を行います。 本ワークショップの目的は技術的な完成度ではなく、協働・創造性・体験的な学びを重視することにあります。ビデオ制作の経験は不要です。必要なのは、好奇心と挑戦してみたいという意欲だけです。 対象者は、すべての専攻の修士課程の学生（および上級学部生）で、参加型研究、質的研究法、教育、ビジュアルストーリーテリングに関心のある方に特におすすめです。 参加人数は約40名で、先着順となります。 動画撮影機能のあるスマートフォン、または編集ソフトの操作にある程度慣れているタブレットをご持参ください。
Session 5: "Storytelling in research"
This workshop will explore why, and how, you might use storytelling to enrich learning and communication in your research. Storytelling is gaining popularity as a methodology, and as a tool for sharing richer insights into pressing social challenges. It is seen to offer an antidote to positivist, ‘big-data’ research and, instead, connect with ‘real’ versions of people. Advocates claim that it is inclusive, flattens hierarchies of power within research, is enjoyable, therapeutic, highlights inequality, sparks personal, social and political change, aligns with indigenous ontologies, exposes and challenges majority narratives and lifts research out of exclusionary academic spaces to engage wider publics. This can certainly be the case, but storytelling research also carries risks in relation to ethics, participant and facilitator well-being and the reproduction of static and potentially problematic ways of knowing. In this workshop session, we aim to encourage experimentation with storytelling as a creative methodology, while also asking critical questions about the value of storytelling for more inclusive and equitable forms of research. You will have the opportunity to engage with some story outputs from a range of research projects from around the world, and experiment with some introductory storytelling techniques to stimulate discussions around how storytelling might be of value in your work.

本ワークショップでは、研究における学びとコミュニケーションを豊かにする手法として、ストーリーテリング（物語ること）をなぜ、どのように活用できるのかを探ります。 ストーリーテリングは、方法論として、また社会課題へのより深い洞察を共有する手段として、近年ますます注目されています。それは、ポジティビズム（実証主義）や「ビッグデータ」的な研究に対する対抗手段とされ、人々の「本当の姿」とつながる手段として見なされています。 ストーリーテリングの支持者は、次のような可能性があると主張しています。 – 包摂的である – 研究における権力構造を平坦化する – 楽しく、セラピー的効果をもたらす – 不平等を可視化する – 個人・社会・政治に変化を促す – 先住民的存在論と調和する – 主流のナラティブを批判的に問う – 閉鎖的なアカデミック空間から研究を解放し、より広い社会とつながる これらは確かにストーリーテリングの魅力の一部ですが、同時にストーリーテリングを用いた研究には、倫理的課題、参加者およびファシリテーターの精神的負担、さらには固定的かつ時に問題のある知識の再生産といったリスクも伴います。 本ワークショップでは、ストーリーテリングを創造的な方法論として試してみることを奨励しつつ、それがより包摂的で公平な研究を実現する上で本当に価値ある手法であるのかを問う重要な視点も提示します。 また、世界中のさまざまな研究プロジェクトから生まれたストーリーの成果物に触れたり、ストーリーテリングの初歩的な技法を体験しながら、ご自身の研究においてストーリーテリングがどのように活用できるかについて議論を深めます。
Session 6: "Contextualising participatory arts methods in conflict settings: Who, when, and why?"
Participatory arts approaches in conflict settings offer opportunities for dialogue and social cohesion. However, their effectiveness and ethical soundness are shaped by contextual factors that require researchers to engage with sensitivity and awareness. This interactive workshop examines three important dimensions of using arts-based methodologies in conflict settings: who, when, and why. Participants will engage in collaborative mapping exercises, case study comparisons, and creative practices to explore these dimensions. First, we will examine who should be involved in arts-based projects, focusing on representation, power dynamics, inclusion of voices often on the margins, and the ethical implications of participation. This will be followed by discussing when such projects are most appropriate, reflecting on timing and readiness in conflict-affected communities. Finally, we will explore why participatory arts are used, focusing on specific goals they may serve in conflict settings. Through hands-on activities and critical reflection, participants will co-develop guidelines for contextual analysis that go beyond one-size-fits-all applications of participatory arts methods. The workshop aims to strengthen participants’ capacity to design arts-based projects that are context-sensitive, ethically grounded, and meaningfully contribute to social cohesion.

紛争下における参加型アートのアプローチは、対話や社会的結束を促進する機会を提供します。しかし、その効果性や倫理的妥当性は、文脈に依存しており、研究者は感受性と意識をもって関わる必要があります。このインタラクティブなワークショップでは、紛争状況でアートを用いた方法論を活用する際の３つの重要な側面ー「誰が」「いつ」「なぜ」を検討します。 参加者は、共同マッピング演習、ケーススタディの比較、創造的な実践を通じてこれらの側面を探ります。まず、アートプロジェクトに誰が関わるべきかを検討し、代表性、権力関係、周縁化された声の包摂、参加に伴う倫理的配慮に焦点を当てます。次に、そのようなプロジェクトがいつ最も適切か、紛争の影響を受けたコミュニティのタイミングや準備状況を振り返りながら議論します。最後に、なぜ参加型アートが用いられるのかを探り、紛争下においてそれが果たし得る具体的な目的に焦点を当てます。 実践的な活動と批判的な振り返りを通じて、参加者は参加型アート手法を「一律に適用する」ことを超えて、文脈に応じた分析のためのガイドラインを共同で作成します。本ワークショップは、文脈に配慮し、倫理的に根ざし、社会的結束に実質的な貢献を果たすアートプロジェクトを設計する力を、参加者が培うことを目的としています。
